Gammas For A Cause

Gammas for a cause Children's Heart Foundation

Most people are unaware that Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) are the most common birth defect in America, affecting approximately one in one hundred, or 40,000 newborns each year. CHDs are responsible for one third of all birth defect-related deaths and sadly 20 percent of children who make it through birth will not survive past their first birthday. Although a child is born every 15 minutes with a CHD, research continues to be grossly under-funded in America. Of every dollar the government spends on medical funding, only a fraction of a penny is directed toward congenital heart defect research.

For this reason, the Gammas Softball Classic tournament proceeds and donation will go to the Children’s Heart Foundation to help CHD research.

Thank you for helping to save children’s lives – one heart at a time.

History of the Gammas Softball Classic

Gamma Softball Classic 2013

[one_half]

In the spring of 2010, three members of Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity got together after a league softball game to set up a friendly softball match between their respective chapters. The Eta chapter (UCLA) had played the Gamma Chapter and Delta Chapter (CSUN) in the previous years. In 2010, after a game between Gamma Chapter (CAL) and Eta Chapter (UCLA), the Alpha Chapter (Chico) would challenge the Eta Chapter (UCLA) to a match. Delta Chapter (CSUN) then volunteered to join this competition. After discussing how the rules would be set, an idea of opening this competition to other chapters came about. [/one_half]

The idea involved to have a regional tournament open to all Gamma Zeta Alpha Chapters to participate in this tournament in the city of Los Angeles. That summer, the Gammas Softball Classic was officially launched with (7) participating chapters. In 2011, an additional (6) teams joined the tournament. Today, the Gammas Softball Classic is the largest organizational sporting event in the history of the fraternity.
