On December 3, 1987, the West Coast of the United States saw a new movement - the beginning of Latino Fraternities. Brought together with the purpose of addressing the shortcomings that Latino Students faced in higher education, fifteen young men came together to form a student organization far beyond their time. With a vision of Academic Excellence, Community Service, and the Maintenance of the Latino Culture through the bonds of brotherhood, these gentlemen brought an institution onto their campus that has become one of the leading Latino student organizations on the West Coast of the United States.Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is proud to be the First Latino Interest Fraternity on the West Coast and for two decades, we have become a vehicle for creating the Latino Leaders of tomorrow and as an instrument for promoting the development of Latino males in higher education.

"Cal State LA has always had a low student involvement rate. The only students that are involved in Cal State LA are those in student organizations. The fact is Cal State LA is a commuter school, which brings the question to a university freshman, “Why should I join an organization that offers brotherhood, when I have my hommies at home?” This question was asked by each member of the founding class. We all had our own chores at home, our own “homies” that we knew since Jr. High, some from Elementary School, and even our own cliques that we simply went out with on weekends. If you would ask any founding father if he ever thought about joining a fraternity, he wod most certainly answer “no.”

With five founding fathers of the 14th chapter of Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity, Inc. it became clear that all five of us were different and offered different talents to the environment at Cal State LA. ulJuan Garcia Jr., Jonathan Arrazola, Francisco Mendieta, Edgar Ordonez, Juan De la O, would bring their own style, charisma, and apply each different educational field on to the fraternity. All five founding fathers had different fields, which had its advantage in developing and growing the chapter. Now 4 of 5 founding fathers have successfully graduated and are currently working in their own fields of study, proving that Latinos can unite and help graduate together through a solid fraternal organization. "Welcome
