Programs
American Diabetes Association
Each fall, the collegiate chapters of Gamma Zeta Alpha participate in our nationally sponsored Diabetes Prevention and Awareness Week. Gammas throughout the state put on a week-long series of events, including screenings, healthcare information and nutrition classes, with the purpose of aiding those diagnosed with diabetes and increase awareness within the community.
All chapters work closely with their local ADA office to provide awareness workshops at their local campuses, community centers, schools, churches and parent centers. Workshops inform people about Diabetes, its causes and reasons as to why Latinos are more prone to the disease than others. Topics include nutrition, lifestyle, diet and other prevention practices.
California Academic Decathlon
As Latinos succeeding at the University level, we feel it is crucial to use our accomplishments and our resources to alleviate the problem of access to higher education that many within underrepresented communities face. Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity, Inc. emphasizes taking action and ensuring accessibility and affordability of higher education for these communities with it service efforts.
It is for this reason that Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is proud to be the first Official Greek Sponsor of the California State Academic Decathlon. Working with local Academic Decathlon offices, our collegiate chapters work to put on county competitions. Brothers aid in event logistics and serve as speech judges for the competition. The purpose of our involvement is to reach our to current high school students and provide information on eligibility and admissions to public and private universities.
Make-A-Wish Foundation
It is our strong belief that incorporating our prospective members into community service is crucial in any education program aimed at leadership development. For this reason we have partnered our prospective members with the Make-a-Wish Foundation as part of their own national philanthropy. With the assistance of the Business Resource Center at California State University, Chico, our prospective members work to raise funds towards a “no strings attached” gift for children who suffer from unknown diseases and struggle with their health on a daily basis.
Prospective Member Bowl-A-Thon
Gamma Zeta Alpha’s prospective members statewide participate at their own chapters in a Bowl-A-Thon organized each year. All proceeds raised by all prospective classes are collected and donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Each prospective class strives to raise as much money as possible in order to make more wishes a reality for these children. The program gives our prospective members the opportunity to participate in hands-on community service and gives them a great insight into the work our organization does.
