Founders
In 1987, Fifteen diverse young men at California State University, Chico, saw a need for a student organization that would provide a supportive atmosphere for themselves and other Latinos to succeed in higher education, something they felt was missing from the existing student organizations. There was a need for a place where students would be able to go to find their cultural roots; a focal point for Latino Culture. Our founding fathers saw the need to build a brotherhood of campus leaders from among the various student organizations on campus.
Further, these gentlemen also felt they held a responsibility to help out those less fortunate than themselves. Recognizing the importance of brotherhood as the mechanism for support and key to achieving their individual and collective goals, they decided to form a new fraternity based on three principles: Academic Excellence, Community Service and Maintenance of the Latino Culture. Hence on December 3, 1987 at California State University, Chico, Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (GZA) was born.
