1st Annual Gamma Classic Softball Tournament

Carlos Rodriguez was named the Most Valuable Player in the Tournament. On Saturday, September 25, 2010, six Gamma Zeta Alpha Teams gathered at Algin Sutton Recreation Park in Los Angeles, to face off in an intense, one-day, one game elimination, softball tournament.

In the first round, the Epsilon Chapter kept it close throughout the game, but fell short to the Delta Chapter (Young Alumni), 6 – 4. With only 8 players, the motherland (Alpha Chapter) took the Gamma Chapter into extra innings, winning 4 – 3 in the bottom of the 8th inning. The 1995 Gamma conference Champions, Delta Chapter (Old School), faced on the young and hyped up Nu Chapter. Despite the Nu Chapters young talent, the older Delta Chapter Gammas managed to keep them quiet in a 4 – 0 victory. The Eta Chapter had a Bye in Round 1.

In the Semi-Finals, the Alpha Chapter, still with only 8 players, looked for another Cinderella victory  against the Eta Chapter Bruins, but was unable to pull it off, as they lost 6 – 2. In a classical “Young versus Old” match up, the Delta Chapter (Young Alumni) took on the Delta Chapter (Old School) for a ticket to the Championship Game. Showing no mercy to younger blood, the Delta Chapter (Old School) reminded the youngsters to respect the elders, with a 16 – 3 victory.

The Southern California UCLA vs CSUN rivalry met in the championship game to determine who ran the south. Two years ago, both teams met in Semi-Valley for a friendly competition, where the Eta Chapter beat the Delta Chapter in back-to-back games. This year, the Delta Chapter would return the favor. Tony Ramos, Kevin Banos, Manny Corral, Carlos Rodriguez, Jesse Ojeda all went deep and over the fence for a combined 6 home runs; Tony Ramos with 2. In the end, the Delta Chapter (Old School) team was too much for the Eta Chapter to keep up with, as they walked away with an easy 15 – 5 victory and the championship trophy.

Throughout the tournament, Carlos Rodriguez (Delta Chapter Founding Father ) played solid defense, was consistent with his hitting and provided the Delta Chapter (Old School) team with great leadership. Carlos Rodriguez was named the Most Valuable Player in the Tournament.

The Gamma Classic Committee would like to thank all participating teams and brothers throughout the state that made it to the event. Special thanks to Eddie Sandoval (Eta Chapter) and Hector Aguilar (Delta Chapter) for their time in putting this event together.
